At Sri Sri Gaushala, the mission goes far beyond providing shelter for cows—it’s about reviving livelihoods, supporting rural communities, and nurturing sustainable agriculture through the power of indigenous breeds.
A Tradition of Giving
In many tribal and rural parts of India, owning a healthy indigenous cow or a strong Nandi bull can transform a family’s future. Yet, for countless farmers, the cost of acquiring and caring for these animals is out of reach. Recognizing this challenge, Sri Sri Gaushala began a heartfelt initiative: gifting purebred cows and Nandi bulls to those who need them most.
How the Initiative Works
The Gaushala raises and cares for a wide variety of native Indian breeds, including Gir, Kankrej, Sahiwal, Ongole, and more. These cows and bulls are known for their resilience, adaptability, and ability to thrive in Indian conditions. Once they are healthy and ready, they are donated—completely free of cost—to tribal farmers, rural families, and NGOs across India.
But the support doesn’t stop at gifting. Farmers also receive hands-on training in traditional and sustainable farming methods. This ensures that the animals are well cared for and that their benefits—like natural fertilizers from dung and urine—are maximized in the fields.
Real Stories of Transformation
In the Dang district of Gujarat, a tribal farmer received a Nandi bull from Sri Sri Gaushala. With the bull’s help, he was able to plough his land more efficiently, reduce his dependence on expensive machinery, and return to natural farming. The soil became healthier, and his harvest improved, bringing new hope to his family.
In Madhya Pradesh, a group of farmers in Kukshi Tehsil were gifted indigenous bulls. These animals not only provided strength for farming but also helped restore traditional agricultural practices that had been fading away. The farmers noticed richer soil, better crop yields, and a renewed sense of pride in their heritage.
NGOs working in remote villages have also benefited. By receiving purebred cows, they’re able to support local families with a sustainable source of milk, natural manure, and even additional income from cow-based products.
The Ripple Effect
Gifting indigenous cows and bulls is more than an act of charity—it’s an investment in the self-reliance and prosperity of rural India. These animals help revive traditional farming, reduce dependence on chemicals and machines, and empower communities to care for their land in harmony with nature.
The initiative also plays a vital role in preserving India’s native breeds, many of which are at risk of disappearing. By placing these animals back in the hands of those who value them most, Sri Sri Gaushala is keeping a precious heritage alive.
Building a Sustainable Future
Through this ongoing effort, Sri Sri Gaushala is helping to create a cycle of giving, growth, and gratitude. Every cow and bull gifted is a step toward healthier farms, stronger communities, and a more sustainable future for rural India.
